Early trauma tends to lodge in the body, in the muscles and organs and especially in the fascia (connective tissues). Transforming Touch therapists focus on the client and their regulation system rather than on a specific problem. This therapy has a profound effect in bringing about healing, relaxation, and feelings of safety. Clients can begin to regulate in such a way that new choices become possible. Clients who were once “stuck” become able to move, and choose, and live satisfying lives.

In childhood our young bodies, out of the need to manage prolonged stressors, hid away feelings that were too big, and feelings which were not supported in the environment. This was a necessary survival strategy, a protective pattern to help us feel safe. These feelings became bound up and hidden within our bodies. Over time, this adaptation in our nervous system becomes our norm and we are left with this intrinsic feeling that there is something wrong with us. We are left with a subtle but painful sense that we need to be fixed.

Metaphor of the Coins

The effect of living in a body that is in high alert is illustrated by this metaphor.

The body is given 100 cents to spend every day. If your body is caught in high alert, consciously or unconsciously perceiving an ordinary day as threatening, it is busy making stress hormones in service of your safety. Without realising it your body is using energy to constrict and numb itself. This is exhausting and lots of cents are spent on simply keeping safe.

Trying to fix and change with the mind and willpower is exhausting and, moreover, it does not work so well. Clients who see themselves as lazy discover they are not lazy but that their energy is being hijacked in service of safety.

In Transforming Touch Therapy, the client is invited to lie on the therapy table or alternatively sits in a chair. The therapist, through touch, works on a seven-point protocol which focuses primarily on the kidneys, adrenal glands, and the brain stem. These are gateways to the nervous system. The therapist provides a steady presence so that the client’s nervous system can open and soften in their own timing. More space in the nervous system allows space for healing of body and mind. Healing takes place in the relationship, allowing space for the client’s story.
